Best Natural Face Toner Recipe: Star Anise

Hands down, my favorite natural face toner is Star Anise. While it is primarily known for its culinary applications, star anise can also offer several benefits when used as a skin toner for the face. Here are some potential advantages and the recipe I use to make my own:

  1. Antioxidant properties: Star anise contains compounds like polyphenols and flavonoids, which possess antioxidant properties. These antioxidants help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules that can contribute to premature aging and skin damage.

  2. Anti-inflammatory effects: The presence of certain compounds in star anise, such as anethole, may have anti-inflammatory properties. Applying star anise toner to the skin can help soothe inflammation, redness, and skin irritations, making it potentially beneficial for individuals with acne, rosacea, or sensitive skin.

  1. Skin brightening: Star anise toner may contribute to a brighter complexion. Its natural compounds can help to even out skin tone, reduce the appearance of dark spots or hyperpigmentation, and promote a more radiant glow.

  2. Antimicrobial properties: Star anise contains antimicrobial constituents, such as anethole and eugenol, which have been shown to have inhibitory effects against certain bacteria and fungi. As a toner, it may help combat acne-causing bacteria and prevent breakouts.

  3. Natural astringent: Star anise toner can act as a mild astringent, helping to tighten and tone the skin. This can potentially minimize the appearance of pores, reduce oiliness, and provide a smoother texture to the skin.

  4. Relaxing aroma: The fragrant scent of star anise can have a relaxing effect on the mind and senses. Incorporating it into your skincare routine may provide a calming and therapeutic experience.

It's important to note that individual results may vary, and it's always a good idea to patch test any new skincare product or ingredient on a small area of your skin before applying it to your entire face. If you have any specific skin concerns or conditions, it's recommended to consult with a dermatologist or skincare professional for personalized advice.

Now how do we make it?

Recipe:

  1. Bring 1 cup of distilled water to a boil.

  2. Add in a small handful (about a quarter cup) of Star Anise. I will sometimes crush a few of them up as well.

  3. Continue boiling for about 3-5 minutes.

  4. Remove from heat and let cool completely.

  5. Once cooled, strain water into a clean glass spray bottle.

  6. Keep refrigerated for up to two weeks.

  7. Spray directly onto face or onto a cotton round and apply to skin.
